Why I think you shouldn't buy a BlackBerry phone

Blackberry's enjoy an interesting reputation in the smartphone world. Like the iPhone, they are instantly recognized as soon as you whip them out of your pocket. At first they were an expensive, executive class phone and although this is not true anymore, having a BB still says: I'm all business, all the time. My job is so important that I must have this phone with me, even on a Friday night when I fully expect to be wasted. That's how important I am.

BB's have two selling points: they send and receive email "really well" and they have a qwerty keyboard. That's it. They are not ergonomic, not pretty, the OS is crap and so is the browser.

Since now there are other phones that "do email" and there is even talk of Google offering a free push mail service, called
IMAP IDLE, BB's have lost their reason for existing, especially when compared with smartphones that do email and gaming and multimedia and have thousands of apps. They are now losing market share all across the world.

Why do you think their phones are suddenly so cheap that suddenly they start existing outside the corporate world? You think it's because of their fantastic multimedia and browsing capabilities? Because suddenly the BB is a "hip, cool people" phone? Hell, no! They are cheap because nobody wants them.

But you don't have to take my word for it: here are the facts:

Massive Android growth in 2010, at the expense of RIM's BlackBerry;

iPhone Could Overtake BlackBerry Market Share in 2011;

BlackBerry’s Era May Be Ending;

Blackberry falls from 20% to 14% in the US and is overtaken by iOS;

BlackBerry's are a losing proposition. Don't buy one.

  1. Vasquinho, you can already have Gmail through push if you set it as an Exchange account. That's how I have it in my Iphone and it works wonders!! ;) It syncs email, contacts and calendar also. :)

  2. Not all of us can afford iPhones, and Nokias are just so 'nicely' designed that they become boring. And the ring tones are awful.
